On balance, however, those seeing improvements in the English skills of new hires won out, with those believing that English skills are “much improved” also accounting for 20% of respondents. Adding this total to the 26% of the “somewhat improved” contingent means 46% have seen skills improving over the past 10 years. Some 17% saw “no change” in young employees’ English abilities.

Those who attributed their English proficiency to “family” showed a notable bias towards seeing English skills deteriorating in young employees, suggesting that those who learned the language from a young age have a more critical ear for people lacking in fluency. The “family” contingent was also far more likely than any other group to answer that English skills are “critical” to their organizations’ success.

That put them in a virtual dead heat with the contingent of 52 that said that English skills were “critical.”

First, the Philippines is a pool of English speakers. Not just a pool of English speakers, but fluent and articulate ones. This is supported by the fact that the Philippines ranks as the 3rd country in the world with the highest number of English speakers. The Philippines was even dubbed as “the world’s budget English teacher” mainly because English is the medium of instruction used in schools and universities. We all know that call centres are geared towards different voice-based objectives of an organisation. In call centres, agents can be required to make a sale, to make invoices, to double check credit card or insurance information,  to make changes on websites while the client is on the phone, to answer customer queries and generally to provide support and assistance to customers. And with the presence of many contact centres in the Philippines that will make the total call centre workforce 500,000 by the end of the year, it is not surprising that the Philippines is a great outsourcing destination for call centre services.

Another reason that makes it more fun to invest call centre operations in the Philippines is the fact that Filipinos speak with either a neutral or a natural American accent. Neutral and natural American accents are advantages for any voice-based job. A neutral accent means the tone of the voice can be modified. It can be tailored to sound like the accent it is tasked to mimic. A natural American accent means there is no way to tell that the person on the other line is located on the other side of the equator.

Lastly, employment rates in the Philippines are competitive, but affordable compared to minimum wages in other countries. When exchange for labour is low, profit margins for investors soar. Setting up and managing businesses are always expensive, and when there is the opportunity to scrimp on expenses, owners will take it. Aside from the affordable labor costs, setting up a call centre in the Philippines means more affordable expenses in terms of infrastructures and office equipment. Setting up an office in the Philippine CBD area still comes across as inexpensive.
